PALOMERAS
and the traceability
of leathers

BACKGROUND

Palomeras y Gambus is a leading name in the tanning industry, known for supplying high quality leathers to the tanning and luxury world.
Approximately 10,000 leathers are processed each week, mainly harvested in Catalonia. With an unwavering commitment to innovation, Palomeras y Gambus has recently faced challenges related to the traceability of its product.

CHALLENGES

At Palomeras y Gambus, traceability was not envisaged on a per-leather basis, making detailed quality control complex.
With new regulations on the horizon, Palomeras y Gambus chose to anticipate the needs of the industry by standing out in the market.
Final customers, especially in the luxury sector, increasingly demand transparency on the origin and processing of leather.
Palomeras y Gambus needed to respond effectively to these demands in order to further consolidate its reputation.

SOLUTION

“In the company, we decided to invest in the Leather Tattoo laser marking system” says Jordi Palomeras. “We have been working with Feltre for many years and knowing the reliability of their solutions, we did not hesitate to rely on them for this new challenge.”
Albert Bausilli, leather quality manager at Palomeras y Gambus, adds: “Feltre’s laser is capable of imprinting a unique code on each leather, radically transforming our traceability process.”

RESULTS

Each leather is now individually marked, allowing accurate tracking from raw material to finished product.
This has reduced errors and significantly improved quality management.
The company prepared in advance to meet future regulatory requirements, ensuring a smooth transition.
Transparency and full traceability meet the demands of final customers, strengthening business relationships and increasing brand confidence.
The introduction of traceability has reduced the time and resources required to monitor leathers, improving operational efficiency and reducing costs.
”We feared that the implementation of this technology would have a negative impact on production speed” says Jordi Palomeras.
”Instead, the average of four leathers per minute has not changed and now staff recognise leathers at a glance thanks to the use of talking codes” continues Albert Bausilli.
“In addition, the laser has been connected to the company’s management system, so the data flows allowing real-time control of all leathers.”

CONCLUSION

With the adoption of Feltre’s Leather Tattoo, Palomeras y Gambus has improved its operations, overcoming initial challenges and laying the foundation for a successful future. This innovation has not only improved traceability, but also consolidated the company’s reputation as a leader in the tanning industry.

NEXT STEPS

The leathers of Palomeras y Gambus are tanned by subcontractors, then some are sold on the market while the others are returned to the factory.
The need then arises to capture the codes at the various processing stages. “Also for this technology, we have relied on Feltre, who will soon install an automated code reading system in our Spanish headquarters and will then spread it to our employees” concludes Jordi Palomeras.
